Three years ago we dug a pond. The garden birds seemed to appreciate the new bathing facilities and a variety of amphibians and invertebrates soon moved in. My favourites are the dragonflies and damselflies - 9 species so far, with several breeding from the first summer. It's fascinating to be able to watch and photograph every stage of their life cycle. This summer the first common hawkers should be emerging after three years as nymphs. There is something new every year.
